Friday Five on Thursday 1/29

I know, I know…it is Thursday…I don’t know how much internet access I’m going to have tomorrow, so I figured I had better write up my Friday Five today. Plus, I’m killing time in the Mercer Island Starbucks again- not to worry, I won’t be disturbed by the crazy middle-schoolers today…I asked.

1. My music point for the week. I just read about this new album coming out. Apparently they threw 14 musicians together, put them in a tree house in Hawaii for 30 days and said- make some music, see what you can do. The group- Operation Aloha is a combination of Maroon5, Gomez, Phantom Planet and some others. The album is coming out May 12th and you can listen to a track, and read about it here: http://www.spin.com/articles/first-listen-maroon-5-phantom-planet-gomez-members-form-band
Anyone have any bright ideas of something productive that can be done living in a tree house in Hawaii for 30 days? Because I am totally down.

2. Book update. I am well into A Prayer For Owen Meany…I have grown a bit more attached to it. I spent some time with it this weekend, like I said I would. It still hasn’t totally pulled me in though. Like, I feel like if I lost the book, I wouldn’t need to immediately run to the library and pick up a new copy to finish it. But enjoying it, nonetheless. On another book note- it is awards season right now and everyone is paying attention to the movie awards, SAG, Oscars, etc…but apparently there were some book awards given out recently by the American Library Association (I read about it on Sarah Dessen’s blog), for Young Adult and Children’s books….here are the winners for the past year, if you are looking for a new read: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28857052/

3. With my new later but irregular schedule at Starbucks, I have been trying to take the bus to work. Then I don’t have to pay for parking- or worry about being a few minutes late to pay my parking and getting a parking ticket (which I have a couple of time…grrrr). Well, my bus-riding days are probably going to be a bit more limited after my Tuesday evening ride home. I sat near the front of the bus, as I usually do- both because I need to be able to see where to get off, and also so I don’t have to fight my way through people when it is time to get off. So I sat in my usual spot, and a few stops in, a man…perhaps that hadn’t showered in some time, and perhaps didn’t have a home…I don’t know for sure (well, the shower part I am fairly certain about) sat down RIGHT next to me. Like, we were squished in there. He really didn’t smell very good…I tried to stick my nose in the scarf wrapped around my neck (thank goodness I was wearing a scarf!), but it did little to keep the smell out. I considered getting off and catching the next bus, but decided to stick it out- it was only 20 minutes. I was reading my book and saw him lifting his hand toward me- it is hard to describe- sort of a “wait just a second” hand motion, in my direction. I looked up, and as I looked up, he put his hand down and looked away from me. Okay. I started reading, and as soon as I put my head down, he put his hand back up toward me. I glanced out of the corner of my eye and his eyes were closed. I looked up again, and he put his hand down…this continued the entire journey…pretty sure he put a curse on me. I am still alive 2 days later, so that is a good sign. BUT, maybe only because I haven’t gotten on the bus since. I don’t know.

4. I have been interested in the happy hour concept, as of late (due to a lack of finances). I met my pal Darby on Monday- which was o-so fun, by the way…at Sonrisa- a new Mexican place in U Village. I didn’t even know it existed. Pretty good deals during their happy hour….we had tacos (on Tuesdays, it is 2 tacos for $2) and the drinks were cheap too. I’ll return. Also, there is a rumor that Frank’s Champagne Parlor is going to be having a happy hour. I really should spend an entire bullet point on Frank’s, but I’ll just include it in this one. SUPER CUTE, just opened restaurant and parlor behind U Village. My friend Olga works there, so I made a stop in last week. The food was delicious…Olga warned that it was maybe a little pricey, but I thought it was totally reasonable for the tasty treats. And she told me that they are going to be starting a Happy hour…they have some yummy looking drinks on the menu…so once I know what the details are- Olga?- I will definitely be stopping in. Do you have any fav happy hour spots? Let me know please.

5. Okay, after being pressured into it, I signed up for Twitter, to see what it is all about…and well, besides finding one of my old college friends that has been living in England, I don’t really see the point. How is it any different than Facebook’s “what are you doing?”? People update what they are doing and it is sent out to the people who are following them…I just don’t see the point. I get it from a fun, technology based product/company, like Brady’s Dishkarma…it is a way for them to keep the Dishkarma name in front of people every single day…but how is it any different than having a facebook page and updating the status- people who are friends with them still see all the updates. Anyone care to explain?

And that is it for this week. I am going to a conference this weekend with my mom and Jen- Guiding Lights…about mentoring. I went last year and it was really inspiring, so I am really excited for the conference this year…that is where I will be without internet. Until next week…

Friday Five 1/23

This week went by so fast, I almost forgot it was time for another Friday Five! I think I am going to make the Friday Five a little more structured (unless I have a week that I don't want to be structured, which is fine...because this is my blog.) So I am going to have a music bullet point- something new I have listened to or a concert I went to...something music related. Another is going to be a book I'm reading, or want to read, or have heard about. There may be other regular topics, but for now...that will do.

1. Last week I went to the O.A.R show...really, I went to see Eric Hutchinson, who was opening. I like his Rock N Roll song...it's quite catchy. The Mountain was doing a soundcheck/meet and greet with Eric and oar before the show, so I went down early for that (stopping first for a nutella mocha, of course!). The soundcheck was fun...I miss putting those together with the radio station...I definitely have moments where I miss working there...but only brief moments. The meet and greet was one of them. Amy and I watched Eric perform and then stayed for two oar songs...she hadn't ever seen them before...and after two songs, put them in a category with Train and we were ready to leave. Hehe...I have seen them a bazillion times (usually with the intention of seeing their opener- although their bass player is def one of my favs) and this show- well the two songs...just weren't their usual selves. Not as fun. Oh well, what can you do. But Eric Hutchinson- adorable and funny. I have been feeling really bored with music lately- please send me your listening suggestions!!

2. I went to the library again the other day to check out some more books. Seriously, I don't know why I never did this library thing before- it's amazing. Anyway...I am currently reading three different books. I am reading 'Smiles To Go' by Jerry Spinelli. He wrote Stargirl, which is one of my absolute favorite books. Seriously, go read it right now. I have read a couple of his other books, which haven't been AS good as Stargirl, but still enjoyable. That is my bedtime book...easy, light, good feeling book before sleep. I just started 'A Prayer for Owen Meany', which I have had a few people tell me is their very favorite book...so I have high hopes for it. Unfortunately it has been my travel book the past couple of days...on the bus, waiting for someone, break at work, etc...which means I only read a few pages at a time, and I feel like I'm not giving it a chance, because it is hard to get into something in such short spurts. So I think I am going to give it a few hours this weekend. And then I am reading some other random young adult book. When I went to the library and asked for some YA recommendations, the gal showed me a few of her fav authors and then also gave me a book that has reviews of hundreds of teen books. I'm not so into this other book. I like the Sarah Dessen books, and this are kind of the same idea, but I just don't like it...I started 3 different books and put them away. Yawn. Oh, I just updated my Goodreads page...also, if you have any fav book recommendations, love to have em.

3. There was a huge accident outside my Starbucks today. My store is on 3rd, downtown, which means there are steep hills on both sides, up and down Madison. And apparently this van (that appeared to have a mom and two children in it...yikes) lost control, or her brakes went out, or something, going down one of the hills. She ran a red light, and then hit a few cars that were parked in the metered spots on the side- sending them up onto the sidewalk (right where I usually park...thank goodness I took the bus today!), and then apparently went up on the curb herself on the other side of another intersection. They closed the street down and there were police cars everywhere. Crazy... Someone from one of the local news channels came in and asked us if we saw anything- which we didn't, but even if we had, we aren't allowed to do interviews.

4. I need to start cooking. I haven't done much in the way of grocery shopping since I finally moved up to Seattle (really, I have been living on mini-wheats-not even the frosted kind, and english muffins with peanut butter. Don't worry, I have eaten a fair amount of my Adam's Old Fashioned PB, and have not gotten sick. I refuse to cut peanut butter out of my diet due to some kind of outbreak.) But I have recently had a couple of tasty dishes prepared by others, and I feel it is time for me to do some cooking myself. I had some yummy broiled salmon and homemade french fries at Olga'a last night- followed up with some coconut pie...all while watching her Laguna Beach DVDs...I know you are jealous you weren't a part of THAT evening! And today my Asst manager brought in some apple dip...that was sooooo good. He brings food in for us that he has made all the time.

5. Let me tell you about how ghetto my jeep is. So, I borrowed my dad's truck last weekend so I could move some furniture to my apartment. And he put a few things into my jeep, so we locked the doors...which I never do. Well, when I got back, my passenger side door wouldn't unlock. You might think, so then use the driver's side door...but I forgot to mention that the handle on the driver's side is broken...altogether broken, doesn't work- usually I have to climb through the passenger side to open my door. Anyway...so it wouldn't unlock and I had to climb through the back of the jeep. Awesome. I left the little triangle window open on my side, so I could reach through and open my door the next morning...well, it ended up giving me a ridiculously gross bruise on my arm- which swelled up, and looked like I had been beaten (that might have just been my perception, seeing as I just read a book about an abusive relationship)...so I tried to take the door apart by myself. Right. So I went to my dad's, and he helped me...but it turns out one of the lever things inside the door totally broke off, so we couldn't really fix it without finding a new part. SOOO, I am kicking it with the passenger side door totally take apart, and have to reach inside the door to grab a lever that unhooks the door. It's great. I love you jeep.

And that's it for this week. Still writing away in my book...I am about twenty pages in.

Five on Friday 1/16

1. As I type this, I am sitting in a Starbucks on Mercer Island- I got out of work about 40 minutes early and figured I would get a little writing in before I make my return to my Seattle babysitting…although, I guess it isn’t technically my return to Seattle babysitting, since I’m on Mercer Island. Whatever. I’m babysitting tonight. BUT…am currently sitting in the most annoying Starbucks environment EVER…apparently the middle school nearby just got out because it is full of giggly girls and hyper boys running around the store, flirting with and showing off for each with pokes and hits. I can’t write in my book- as my chair keeps getting knocked, or a piercing scream interrupts my thoughts…so I decided to write up my Friday Five…

2. Highlight of my day…Friday Night Lights returns tonight. I guess I can’t say it is the highlight of my day, since it hasn’t actually happened yet…and I suppose the TV could be out at the house I will be babysitting at…which would truly be upsetting, and not at all the highlight of my day. But I am remaining optimistic. All I can say is Lila and Riggins better not get together!!

3. Nutella Mochas…I went to Faire…a café near the radio station after my shift yesterday. Was meeting my pal for a momentary catch up and chat, and figured I would spend my two hours of writing there as well. And they have nutella mochas…which are pretty much the yummiest thing ever. I used to try to make them in Barcelona- we had a little espresso machine in our apartment, so I would stick a blob of nutella in my latte. It generally never melted into the drink and was just a big gulp of mush at the bottom of my cup (not to say that wasn’t delicious)…but this drink at Faire was awesome. Highly recommend it…not to mention the pesto turkey sandwich I had for lunch, since I was on a writing roll, and stayed at the café for about five hours.

4. New Ian McFeron music is going to be out soon. I just went and saw the band play last Saturday…drove an hour and a half north for the show…thought it was a little silly to drive so far, but I haven’t seen them play in months and months and months…and after having been with them on the road and seeing them every single night, I was missing the live show. So I went…it was totally worth the drive. (Okay, seriously, some girl in pink jeans and a silver belt with pigtails just screamed right behind me…I hope she is reading over my shoulder and realizes she has made my blog for her level of annoying…and now there are about 5 of them that have decided to just sit on the ground..in the middle of Starbucks…seriously, is this what our youth have become…good grief.) Moving on...Ian has a new album coming out in March, “Love Me Blue”…they are having a release party at the Tractor…if you are in Seattle, you should definitely go. You can get a sneak peak at a few of the new songs on Ian’s MySpace page. So check it out. Be excited. I am.

5. http://www.dishkarma.com/ Check out the website, figure out what your “ultimate meal” is, and then add it to the site. My friend Brady and a couple of his pals just launched their website and it is a lot of fun. Basically you put together what your perfect meal would be- a soup, salad, appetizer, main course and dessert. You pick the food and the restaurant you experienced it…and share with their ever-growing network. Brady introduced the game to me back in 2001 and it has been a staple in my get-to-know-you conversations since then (I’m sure I have asked a few of you about your ultimate meal)…so I need to figure out what my current choices are, and post my video on the site…you should too!

And that is all for this week, I suppose. Happy Birthday to Lauren tomorrow…good grief, we are old. Have a stellar weekend all.

First Friday Five...

As I was doing a little research for the book I am working on, I looked up the young adult author, Sarah Dessen. I started reading her blog...which is really funny- totally reminds me of my friend Jen...and she does this thing on Fridays where she bullet points 5 things she has been thinking about or that have happened during the week. And I like the idea. So I'm stealing it for my new blog. I have no idea where this will go...but it seems like an easy, not-too-much-time-involved way to keep a journal and write. Here goes...

1. I don't really do new years resolutions, but I have decided to do one this year. I am going to finish everything I start. I have realized that I am a little flaky in this area. I am totally into coming up with ideas, and getting the ball rolling. When I get into something, I get REALLY into it...which is both good and bad. I am horrible about finishing. Even when I was working my "real" job in radio...I always had a hard time getting my recaps out to clients on time. I get so focused on something that I think I burn out and need to move on to something else...which I think is strange, considering I am such a multi-tasker...you would think I could work on more that one thing at a time. But I think when it is an "idea"...something new that I get really excited about, I just want to focus on it full-force. So anyway...I am going to limit myself from taking on projects that I don't see finishing...and I am absolutely going to finish those that I start. It is in writing now...so I have to.

2. London Fog Tea Lattes. The new promotion at Starbucks is the Tazo Tea Lattes...and I am totally in love with the London Fog. It started out mostly because I liked the name. I feel like I should develop an accent just by drinking it (unfortunately, I haven't...boo). What it is- earl grey tea (infused with lavendar...totally calming) with half water and half milk. It comes with vanilla syrup, but I skip the sweetener. Sometimes i do like to have it with soy milk, which sweetens it up. Big fan...give it a try. But don't think you will start talking with an attractive accent by drinking it...won't happen.

3. Friday Night Lights. Olga insisted I watch the show- she let me borrow her first and second season on DVD. I humored her, since she humored me by reading Twilight. I didn't get into the show at first...the whole premise...the small town Texas high school football craze...everything in the town revolving around the game on Friday night...I just thought it was kind of dumb. But, the characters are likeable...which is important to me. I love a good, likeable, root-for-them character. So I kept watching...and yep, she was right...it is a great show. I finished the second season up last night...so now I have to wait for the third season to come on TV...boo, hiss. So, if you have some free time on your hands, and are looking for a new show to rent on your netflix...Friday Night Lights...I recommend it. And I love Tim Riggins.

4. Painting. I decided, in an effort to make my life here in Seattle a tad more permanent, to paint a wall in my bedroom (which I haven't actually moved in to...despite it being available to me on January 1st...) In an effort to finish what I start, I got the idea, did a little research about texture painting and good colors for a bedroom, etc...and went right out and bought the paint. I am not a good decision maker. For two reasons... the first being that usually, I honestly just don't care...I know I'll be happy with anything, so I would rather someone else, that maybe does care, make the decision, because I know I can live with whatever it is. And second...oh my gosh, there are just so many options out there. It stresses me out. What if I pick something and then I find something I like more. It's the whole commitment thing...what if there is something better that I just haven't figured out yet. BUT, I made myself just make a decision (it was tough because Home depot has Disney colors...and I really wanted to pick the color just based on the name...). So I went straight to the apartment and was going to do the job right then...and my bedroom light was out...so I painted in the near dark...the hallway light was streaming through the door. I did one wall a solid color and then did a sponge thing on two of the other walls. Hoefully it looks okay...I have no idea because there wasn't a light. :)

5. Calorie content on menus. I stayed downtown in a hotel with my mom that past couple of days. She had a conference. It was really fun...I was done with work in the afternoon and didn't have my car because it was being worked on (oh, I could have a Friday 6 and rant about my car...grrr, but I won't...because I love her...I love you jeep, I do, please be nice!) so I had the lovely opportunity to kick it in the hotel room, with awesome views of the city, and sit and read, and work on my book...and just relax and pretend to be on vacation. I love hotels. Last night we went to the cheesecake factory for dinner, it was right underneath the hotel. And I discovered they have a full book (you know how their menu is a novel in itself) a full book of the nutritional information of their food. And it was a really depressing book to read, I tell you. it is no flippin wonder that we are an obese country when the SIDE salads are between 600 and 1200 calories each. I don't recommend reading it. If you are going to go out to eat...then go out and enjoy your food. Just don't do it all the time. And maybe go to the gym and run. That is what I will be doing tomorrow morning.

And there you go...my first Friday Five of 2009. Which, by the way, is going to be a kick ass year. It just is.
